Embark on a journey into the remote north of Mongolia, where vast steppe, forest, and taiga landscapes lead you to one of the country’s most unique cultures. Beginning in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s vibrant capital, the route heads north through sweeping countryside to Murun, gateway to Khuvsgul Province. From here, paved roads give way to wilderness as you travel into the secluded Ulaan-Uul region, a land of rolling hills, rivers, and untouched nature marking the transition from steppe to taiga.

In the far northern taiga, you’ll meet the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders—families who continue a semi-nomadic lifestyle deeply tied to their reindeer. This rare encounter offers insight into their daily traditions, spiritual connection to nature, and distinctive dwellings, while providing exceptional opportunities for portrait and lifestyle photography amid pristine forests and mountains.

The journey then turns southward, passing through diverse landscapes before reaching Erdenet, Mongolia’s second-largest city, where modern life contrasts with the wilderness you’ve explored. Returning to Ulaanbaatar, the tour combines cultural immersion, dramatic northern scenery, and authentic nomadic encounters—perfect for adventure travelers, photographers, and those seeking Mongolia beyond the usual routes.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders in the northern taiga
  • Authentic nomadic life & portrait photography
  • Stunning taiga landscapes, sunrise & sunset shooting
  • Remote off-road travel & cultural immersion

Important Notes

  • This journey includes long driving days through remote regions.
  • A sleeping bag is required for overnight stays in the taiga.
  • Roads in northern Mongolia are mostly unpaved and rough, suitable for adventure travelers.
  • The tour is especially designed for photographers and explorers seeking authentic nomadic experiences.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1 – Arrival in Ulaanbaatar / City Tour

Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will be greeted by your local guide and transferred to the city center for hotel check‑in. Once settled, begin your introduction to Mongolia with a visit to Gandan Monastery, the country’s most important Buddhist monastery, where the magnificent Migjid Janraisig statue—the tallest standing Buddha in Mongolia—offers a striking welcome.

Continue to Sükhbaatar Square, the symbolic heart of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by landmarks such as the Government Palace and the Chinggis Khaan Monument. Depending on interest, optional visits include the Chinggis Khaan Museum, the National History Museum, or the Choijin Lama Museum, each offering unique insights into Mongolia’s past and culture. Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant, with a choice of traditional Mongolian dishes or international cuisine. The evening is free to relax and acclimatize before overnight stay at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

Included: Lunch

Day 2 – Ulaanbaatar to Murun (Full Day Drive)

After breakfast, depart early for the long journey north to Murun, the administrative center of Khuvsgul Province. Covering approximately 700 km, the drive takes 11–12 hours and offers a sweeping introduction to Mongolia’s diverse landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through rolling steppe, scattered forests, and small roadside settlements that reveal glimpses of rural life.

Roads are mostly paved, though some sections can be bumpy, adding to the sense of adventure. Lunch will be enjoyed at local roadside restaurants, where simple but hearty meals provide a taste of provincial hospitality. By evening, arrive in Murun, a town of 40,000–47,000 residents that has served as the provincial capital since the 1930s. Today, it remains the main hub for travel north toward Lake Khuvsgul, national parks, and the remote taiga regions. Overnight stay in Murun.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 – Murun to Ulaan‑Uul Village (Soum)

After breakfast, depart Murun and travel north toward Ulaan‑Uul Soum, a remote district of Khövsgöl Province located about 171 km away. The drive takes you off paved roads into rugged terrain, where the open steppe gradually transforms into forested taiga landscapes. Along the way, enjoy stops for photography, capturing rolling ridges, fast‑flowing rivers, and nomadic herder camps framed by dramatic mountain backdrops. Ulaan‑Uul is home to roughly 4,000 residents, primarily Darkhad Mongols, and offers a glimpse into rural life far removed from Mongolia’s larger cities. The region’s mountainous terrain and lush coniferous forests form part of the taiga belt, making it ideal for landscape and nature photography. Lunch will be taken at local roadside restaurants before continuing through scenic valleys and forest clearings. Arrive in Ulaan‑Uul by afternoon and settle in for an overnight stay in this secluded village.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 – Ulaan‑Uul to Taiga (Reindeer Families)

After an early breakfast, set out toward the northern taiga, a dense forest zone of larch, pine, and spruce carved by rivers and mountain ridges. This remote wilderness is home to the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders, one of the world’s last reindeer‑dependent cultures. With the help of local guides, navigate deep forest trails where mobile reception is scarce and paths are often difficult.

The taiga around Tsagaan Nuur supports rich biodiversity, from birds and small mammals to occasional sightings of elk or wolves, offering a striking contrast to Mongolia’s open steppe. Visiting Tsaatan families provides rare insight into their semi‑nomadic lifestyle, seasonal migrations, and spiritual connection to reindeer, which remain central to transport, food, and culture. Historically linked to the Tuva region of Russia, many Tsaatan migrated into Mongolia during the 20th century, and today both western and eastern taiga groups maintain strong ties to this wild landscape. Photography highlights include reindeer herds, family portraits, nomadic daily life, and sunset landscapes. Overnight in the taiga with basic facilities; sleeping bag required.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – Full Day Taiga Photography

Spend an entire day immersed in the pristine taiga forest, living alongside reindeer herding families. The untouched nature, soft light, and traditional lifestyle create perfect conditions for both cultural and landscape photography. You will meet two Tsaatan families (approximately 4–6 people) and capture intimate portraits with reindeer, daily nomadic routines, and the unique atmosphere of their camps.

Photography sessions are planned throughout the day: sunrise and morning nature scenes, portraits with reindeer, forest light and misty rivers, mountain horizons, and evening sunset shooting. This day offers rare opportunities to document authentic nomadic life in one of Mongolia’s most remote regions. Overnight stay in the taiga with the same local accommodation.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 – Taiga to Ulaan‑Uul to Erdenet

Begin the morning with optional photography in the taiga before departing southward. After breakfast, drive back to Ulaan‑Uul Soum, stopping for lunch and enjoying opportunities to capture landscapes along the way. Continue the journey toward Erdenet, Mongolia’s second‑largest city with a population of about 98,000.

Founded in 1974 following the discovery of rich copper and molybdenum deposits, Erdenet grew into one of the world’s largest copper mining centers and remains an important industrial hub. Beyond mining, the city is also known for its wool carpet factory and urban development, offering a striking contrast to the remote wilderness you have just experienced. Arrive in the evening and overnight in Erdenet.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 – Erdenet to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, begin the full‑day drive back to Ulaanbaatar, covering approximately 370 km. The journey offers a final chance to enjoy Mongolia’s diverse scenery, from rolling hills to open steppe, with opportunities for roadside photography along the way. Lunch will be taken en route at a local restaurant.

By evening, arrive in the capital, a vibrant city that blends modern life with traditional heritage, monasteries, and nomadic influences. Check into your hotel and relax after the long drive. Overnight stay in Ulaanbaatar.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 8 – Ulaanbaatar City

Enjoy a leisure day in Ulaanbaatar, with time to explore at your own pace. Options include visiting museums, browsing local shops for souvenirs, or attending a traditional Mongolian concert. This free day allows you to relax, reflect on your journey, and experience the capital’s cultural highlights.
