This journey takes you deep into northern Mongolia during the winter season, crossing vast steppe, forest, and taiga landscapes to encounter some of the country’s most iconic people and traditions. Beginning in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, the route travels north through wide‑open countryside to Murun, gateway to Khuvsgul Province. From there, the adventure leaves paved roads behind, entering the remote Ulaan‑Uul region of rolling hills, rivers, and untouched wilderness that marks the transition from steppe to taiga.

In the far north, you reach the taiga forest, home of the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders. This isolated region preserves one of the world’s last reindeer‑dependent cultures, where families live semi‑nomadic lives shaped by reindeer for transport, food, and spiritual traditions. Time spent here offers rare insight into their dwellings, daily routines, and deep connection to nature, alongside exceptional opportunities for portrait, lifestyle, and reindeer photography in pristine winter landscapes.

The journey then continues southward to Erdenet, Mongolia’s second‑largest city, providing a striking contrast between remote wilderness and modern urban life before returning to Ulaanbaatar.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit Tsaatan reindeer herders in the northern taiga
  • Authentic nomadic life & portrait photography
  • Stunning winter taiga landscapes, sunrise & sunset shooting
  • Remote off‑road travel & cultural immersion

Important Notes

  • This tour involves long driving days through remote areas.
  • A sleeping bag is mandatory for the taiga stay.
  • Roads in northern Mongolia are mostly unpaved, so expect rough travel conditions.
  • The tour is ideal for photographers and adventure travelers seeking unique landscapes and cultural encounters.
  • Winter temperatures can drop well below –25 °C, especially in January, so appropriate clothing is essential:
  • Layered thermal base wear (top and bottom) to retain warmth.
  • Insulated outer jacket (down or synthetic) with windproof shell.
  • Waterproof, insulated boots with thick wool socks.
  • Gloves, hat, and scarf to protect extremities from frostbite.
  • Optional face covering (balaclava or neck gaiter) for severe wind chill.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1 – Arrival in Ulaanbaatar / City Tour

Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, meet your local guide and transfer to the city center. After checking into your hotel, begin exploring the capital with a visit to Gandan Monastery, Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monastery, home to the impressive Migjid Janraisig statue, the tallest standing Buddha in the country. Continue to Sükhbaatar Square, the heart of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by landmarks such as the Government Palace and the Chinggis Khaan Monument. Optional visits include the Chinggis Khaan Museum, the National History Museum, or the Choijin Lama Museum, depending on interest. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, offering traditional Mongolian cuisine or international options. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

Included: Lunch

Day 2 – Ulaanbaatar to Murun

After an early breakfast, depart Ulaanbaatar for the long drive north to Murun, the administrative center of Khuvsgul Province. Covering approximately 700 km (11–12 hours), the journey passes through rolling steppe, scattered forests, and small roadside settlements, offering varied landscapes along the way. Roads are mostly paved, though some sections can be bumpy. Lunch will be taken at local roadside restaurants, providing a taste of regional cuisine. Arrive in Murun by evening and check into your accommodation. With a population of around 40,000–47,000, Murun is one of Mongolia’s larger provincial towns outside Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, and Erdenet, serving as the gateway to Lake Khuvsgul, national parks, and the northern taiga. Overnight stay in Murun.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 – Murun to Ulaan‑Uul Soum

After breakfast, depart Murun and drive north toward Ulaan‑Uul Soum, located about 171 km away. The route gradually shifts from open steppe into forested terrain, offering classic Mongolian landscapes and glimpses of rural life far from major cities. Roads are unpaved and rough, making this section ideal for adventure travelers prepared for off‑road conditions. Along the way, stop for landscape photography, capturing rolling taiga ridges at sunrise, streams reflecting in forest clearings, and nomadic herder camps framed by mountain backdrops. Lunch will be taken at a local roadside restaurant before continuing through mountainous passes and fast‑flowing rivers. By afternoon, arrive in Ulaan‑Uul, a district of around 4,000 residents, primarily Darkhad Mongols. The area’s lush coniferous forests and dramatic terrain mark the transition into the northern taiga, providing exceptional opportunities for nature and cultural photography. Overnight stay in Ulaan‑Uul.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 – Ulaan‑Uul to Taiga (Tsaatan Reindeer Herders)

After an early breakfast, drive deeper into the northern taiga, a dense forest zone of larch, pine, and spruce carved by rivers and mountain ridges. Covering 50–100 km, this off‑road journey requires the assistance of local guides, who help navigate hidden trails and introduce you to herder families. The taiga is home to the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders, one of the world’s last reindeer‑dependent cultures. Historically from Tuva in Russia, Tsaatan families migrated into Mongolia’s northern forests in the 20th century and continue to live semi‑nomadic lives, moving seasonally with their herds. Time here offers rare insight into their daily routines, traditional dwellings, and spiritual connection to nature. Photography opportunities abound: reindeer herds, family portraits, nomadic life, and dramatic forest landscapes at sunset. Overnight stay in the taiga with herder families. Sleeping bag required.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – Full Day in the Taiga

Spend a full day immersed in the northern taiga forest, visiting two Tsaatan reindeer‑herding families. This remote setting, with its untouched nature, soft light, and traditional lifestyle, creates ideal conditions for both cultural and nature photography. Dedicated sessions include sunrise landscapes, morning forest light, portraits with reindeer, and daily nomadic activities. Capture misty rivers, mountain horizons, and evening sunset scenes that highlight the beauty of this wilderness. The day offers rare insight into reindeer culture and exceptional photographic opportunities. Overnight stay in the taiga with local families.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 – Taiga to Ulaan‑Uul to Erdenet

Optional morning photography in the taiga, capturing forest light and reindeer herds at sunrise. After breakfast, begin the return drive south toward Ulaan‑Uul Soum, stopping en route for landscape photography and glimpses of village life. Lunch will be served in Ulaan‑Uul before continuing the journey toward Erdenet, Mongolia’s second‑largest city with nearly 98,000 residents. Founded in 1974 around one of the world’s largest copper mines, Erdenet has grown into a major industrial hub, also known for its wool carpet factory. The city provides a striking contrast to the remote wilderness, offering a glimpse of modern urban life in Mongolia. Arrive in Erdenet by evening and check into your hotel.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 – Erdenet to Ulaanbaatar

After an early breakfast, drive south toward Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital and cultural heart. Covering approximately 370 km, this full‑day journey blends scenic countryside with the anticipation of returning to the city’s mix of modern life and traditional heritage. Lunch will be taken en route. Evening arrival in Ulaanbaatar with overnight stay at the hotel.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 – Ulaanbaatar City Exploration

Enjoy a leisurely day in Ulaanbaatar, with time to explore the city at your own pace. Optional activities include visiting museums, shopping for local crafts, or attending a traditional Mongolian concert. This free day allows you to experience the capital’s blend of modern life and nomadic heritage. Overnight stay at a comfortable hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

Included: Breakfast
